 Character is tapped by Google.Key leadership position in AI for its founder

By selecting a former Character, Google has made a big change in the AI space.co-head of the AI models division and founder of AI.

The former founder of Character.AI, Noam Shazeer, was named by the tech giant as a co-lead of its main AI project, according to sources.

In a memo to coworkers, Google said that the former researcher will join the business as a technical lead for Gemini, assisting Jeff Dean and Oriol Vinyals, two more co-leaders for Google's AI models.

Notably, DeepMind, the company's AI division, developed Google's AI model Gemini, which is included in products like the Pixel phone and Search.

Shazeer re-joined Google lately, having previously left the chatbot firm he founded back in 2021. The US tech behemoth spent billions to acquire him and a few other employees for DeepMind, as well as to obtain a license from Character.AI.

"We are thrilled to join the best team on earth building the most valuable technology on earth," Shazeer wrote in an email response to the message that Reuters was allowed to examine.
