At the Leipzig Music Festival, ferris wheel gondolas catch fire; casualties are recorded

On August 18, 2024, Leipzig, Germany suffered yet another setback when two gondolas on a Ferris wheel caught fire!

One gondola caught fire, which quickly spread to another while "spinning wildly."

"We were about 100 to 150 metres away and wanted to go to the next concert and then we saw that it was burning brightly and that some people were still on the Ferris wheel," a spectator provides insight.

The insider went on, "Watching it was just an insane moment. Then, with some passengers still inside and the ride still burning, the Ferris wheel began to spin erratically and went totally crazy. It was really intense."

In the aftermath of the current events, at least 23 people have sustained injuries.

The following information was provided by police investigating the case: "First responders and at least four police officers were being examined in hospital for possible smoke inhalation, but that their injuries were reportedly mild."

As of right now, no information is available regarding the cause of the fire. In addition to calling in an arson investigator, the criminal investigators are already on the site, looking into what caused the fire. For the time being, the fire's vicinity is shut off, according to Josephin Sader, a spokesperson for the Leipzig police department.

It is important to note that the fire at the Indie-rock Highfield Festival in the eastern German city began at approximately 9 p.m. local time.

30,000 people attended the event, according to the organisers, and none of them knew that a fire would start and kill people.
