The new President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, drove to Iraq in an effort to further strengthen the already existing close contacts with this country.

The newly elected president’s three-day visit took place even as the Middle East is experiencing a period of unrest due to events happening in Gaza and after new sanctions were imposed by Western nations on Iran for the alleged transportation of short-range rockets to Russia that were meant for Ukraine.

The Iraqi Prime Minister’s office, in a brief statement, said, “Prime Minister Mohd. Shia al-Sudani extends welcome to President of the Muslim Land of Iran, Mr. Masoud Pezeshkian.”

Pezeshkian is keen on improving relations with any region, as he intends to dissolve Iran’s global restrictions and lessen the consequences of US sanctions on its economy.

It should be noted that only a few hours before the arrival of Pezeshkian, an explosion occurred at a base close to the airport used by coalition forces as part of the anti-jihad initiative.

Pezeshkian is shown in the picture posted on IRIB-2, where he gives a farewell speech, stating, "Iraq is one of our friends, sisters, and within Islam citizens with whom relations should be fostered."

"And this is why; it will be mapped out as the first tour," he continued.

Iran has strategically positioned itself as one of the most important economic partners of Iraq and commands great power in Baghdad.
