Colombia Avenges Copa America Loss with Win Over Argentina in World Cup Qualifier

This time around, Argentina suffered defeat in a World Cup qualifying match against Colombia, and they wished to settle the score for their painful loss in the Copa America finals.

As reported in Malay Mail, Colombia on Tuesday, September 11, defeated Argentina 2-1 in the South American qualifying for a head-to-head match of the 2026 World Cup in Barranquilla.

Colombia’s Yerson Mosquera opened the scoring in the 25th minute. This was the only goal of the match in the first half until Niko Gonzalez’s equalizer in the 48th minute.

The team captain, James Rodríguez, recorded one assist and scored from the penalty, which allowed the Colombian team to achieve an important victory over Argentina, more so without their injured star player, Lionel Messi.

Even Rodríguez, who scored that decisive penalty and was the chosen target man, said, “I do not ever remember scoring against them, but there is a first time for everything. We hope to make a habit of playing finals. It was just a game, but a game against a Real Madrid team that has won it all, so this victory is sweeter.”

Besides that, another qualifier, Brazil, lost to Paraguay 1-0 without their leading player, Neymar, who had an injury.

A southerly strike from the Inter Miami midfielder Diego Gomez in the 20th minute brought Paraguay to seventh with nine points. At the same time, that upsetting disappointment pushed Brazil to fifth with ten points in the United States.

The countdown has started for the juicy event, the 2026 World Cup, which is co-hosted by America and Canada. It will be held in June 2026, right after the summer.
