| Chronic Steroid Use Increases Diabetes Risk – New Study Reveals |
According to a recent study by scientists at the University of Oxford, treasuries and patients who are treated with steroids are at a much higher risk of diabetes as compared to others. Patients have managed to stay free from dry mouth, while those on steroids are also said to be at risk of developing diabetes, journalism co.
As reported by BBC, glucocorticoids—a type of steroid—are said to make diabetes and its complications mutation catalysts (an abstract presented to) even in safer doses.
Glucocorticoids are a type of steroid used to treat cancers, abscesses, and rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease.
It's known that steroids help in inflammation, but they have severe effects on controlling blood sugar levels.
In this study, clinical information on 451,606 adults treated at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust during the period 2013 - 2024 showed that systemic and inhaled glucocorticoids increase diabetes risk by 2.6 times in patients.
The principal investigator of this study, Dr. Rajna Golubic, expressed, “These last results allow health care personnel to assess the risk of the occurrence of new diabetes with greater accuracy and may motivate clinicians to rationalize their clinical approach to the identification and therapy of new diabetes genesis.”
He further added, “Although we looked at inpatients, glucocorticoid tablets are used with other indications also and have been prescribed by GPs for asthma or rheumatoid arthritis and hence this danger is also relevant for them.”
Moreover, the investigators pledged that they will add more data on further studies to improve the outcomes.
