33 Arrested in Manipur After Recent Violence: Latest Updates from Indian Police

Police accused 33 people over a spike in ethnic violence in Manipur state, where officers imposed a curfew and internet blackout amid a week-long protest.

In May 2023, a conflict between the mainly Hindu Meitei and overwhelmingly Christian Kuki erupted into bloodshed in Manipur, killing at least 200. Since then, the communities have fractured into their own factions across several influential groups in this northeastern state that shares a porous border with trouble-torn Myanmar.

Fresh clashes broke out this month after months of relative quiet. Rocket salvo and drone bombs marked contentious, even deadly, anti-government protests, with at least 11 people killed on Friday alone—police described this as a “significant escalation” of violence.

Police, in a statement, said that so far, 33 people have been arrested and seven juveniles apprehended after the violent protests over the past few days. It appealed to the people “to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and normalcy.”

An internet blackout was enforced across swathes of the country.
